DIABETES CARE PROGRAM OF NOVA SCOTIA (DCPNS)
Feet
First: A Diabetic Foot Forum
April 23, 2009
(1:00 to 4:15
p.m.)
Pier 21,
Halifax, NS
This session will focus on the Diabetic
Foot in Nova Scotia. Emphasis will be
placed on increasing awareness around the disturbing numbers of lower extremity
amputations (LEAs) in this province. A look at a DCPNS mapping tool will reveal
the availability and accessibility of various diabetic footcare
services across Nova Scotia. This will
be followed by a motivating presentation by vascular surgeon, Dr. Gerry MacKean, who will identify key strategies to reduce the
number of LEAs within this province.
The DCPNS will share a number of foot
care resources that have been developed by the DCPNS Diabetic Foot Working Group
in response to recommendations from the document, The Diabetic Foot in Nova Scotia: Challenges and Opportunities. A demonstration will show the diabetes care
provider that it only takes minutes to implement the Foot Risk
Assessment tool into daily practice.
The Foot Forum concludes with an
eye-opening presentation by Freeman Churchill as he provides diabetes care
providers with a better understanding of the role of the pedorthist
within the retail setting.
