Welcome!

We are the diabetes center (DC) that serves Antigonish and surrounding areas.  We provide information on all aspects of how to care for diabetes.  This is tailored to people with diabetes and their interested family members as well as other health professionals.

We promote self-management to enhance your quality of life and to reduce the risk of developing diabetes complications.  We work closely with other community agencies to provide comprehensive diabetes care for our area.

We are open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

To make an appointment or ask about our services, please phone (902) 863–2830 ext. 4249  Your first appointment will be made after your doctor has referred you to our program or if you self-refer, your physician will be contacted for pertinent information related to your diabetes.  The staff of the diabetes program will arrange follow-up appointments.

If you have diabetes (type 1 or 2 – adult, child adolescent, or young adult), are pregnant and have diabetes, or have been told you have a mild form of diabetes, we would be more than happy to assist you in managing your diabetes.

We provide a number of ways to learn about your diabetes.  All of these start with an individual appointment where your needs are discussed with the nurse and dietitian.  We offer:

  • Individual instruction
  • Group instruction. (This provides you with an opportunity to learn from and with others who also have diabetes.)
  • Insulin initiation. (If you need insulin, this means that you can start taking your insulin as an outpatient.  You may not need to be admitted to the hospital.)
  • Insulin pump therapy program (includes carbohydrate counting)
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring available

Other:  Other special classes are also offered.  These include:  Coping& stress management group, Good Health Eating Guide (GHEG) group review, Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)/Impaired fasting glucose (IFG), the lifestyle management program, as well as a cardiac group and cholesterol lowering.

Social Work Service referrals, foot care referrals and ophthalmology appointments can be arranged at the clinic.  Diabetologist referrals are available.  Our DC has a lab on site.
