Welcome!

The Dartmouth General Hospital Diabetes Centre (DC) serves Dartmouth and surrounding areas.  We provide education on all aspects of diabetes to help promote self-care.

We are open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

You will need to be referred to our DC by your doctor.  Once we have received a referral, an appointment date and an information package will be sent to you.

Services Available

  • Comprehensive initial assessment by nurse and dietitian.
  • Individual follow up.
  • Group day program.
  • Educational modules including topics such as:
    • Complications/Foot care.
    • Fat/Fibre.
    • Label reading.
    • Sick days/Travel.
    • Over-the-counter-medications.
    • Carbohydrate counting.
    • Exercise and dealing with diabetes.

We also offer a “Survival Skills Class” every two months to allow people to obtain some education while they are waiting for an appointment at our DC.  As well, we provide education to people who have impaired glucose tolerance (high blood sugar levels – but not yet diabetes).

NOTE:  We do not see children or pregnant women with diabetes.  They are seen at the IWK Health Centre.
